The codebreaking and intelligence miracles worked during World War 2 at Bletchley Park have been splashed across the media for decades.
Most of the accounts give the impression that Bletchley Park was designed on a blanksheet of paper shortly before the war began.
Not so!
The foundation of Bletchley Park was the Admiralty's Room 40 during World War 1, and many keyplayers at Bletchley Park were Room 40 alumni. Also largely underreported is Winston Churchill's relationship with Room 40.
This lecture will cover Room 40's establishment and operation during World War 1, illustrating how it set the stage for Bletchley Park. It will also cover Winston Churchill's role in establishing Room 40 and his obsession with secrecy that diminished the use of the intelligence gained by Room 40.
Admiral Sir Reginald “Blinker” Hall, founder of Room 40
